Quilled galleon "Golden Hind"

Miniature galleon in a hand

Let me show you today my new three-dimensional quilled creation. This is a model of a sailboat, or to be precise — the galleon "Golden Hind" . I started this project about a year ago, but couldn't finish it until recently.

Quilled galleon detail - lifeboat

For this ship miniature I used mainly black, yellow and brown quilling strips 1/8" wide (3 mm), as well as pieces of black and yellow colored paper.

Quilled galleon detail - masts

The masts are crafted out of wooden toothpicks painted with acrylic paint, the sails out of Korean paper of a special type that somewhat resembles crepe paper. The tiny steering wheel can be turned :) The anchors are made of paper, too, and painted with a metallic marker.

The vessel is placed on a cardboard base coated with wood pattern self-adhesive foil, under a plastic display dome. The display dome is one that comes with Play-Doh Make 'n' Display kits.

The ship measures 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) in height and 3 5/8 inches (9.2 cm) in length.

Quilled galleon detail - stern

It's no wonder it took you a year to make this. The patience, the precision, the itty-bitty, teeny-weeny cuts. Yikes.

It looks like something that should be housed in an art museum on permanent display.
