I made this spider cake for one of my kid's birthdays. I thought I'd post it before Halloween, for my readers who celebrate this holiday.
I made this bat cake for my twins' third birthday. This happened about a year and a half ago, though. Such a cake is very easy to make: its components are cut out of a round sponge cake and coated with chocolate cream. The eyes, ears and teeth were made of marzipan, although colored cream or candies can be used as well.
I found this great idea in Kids' Party Cakes. Maybe someone will find it useful, especially now, when Halloween is almost here :)
This is the other cake I made for my twins' fourth birthday. It's a bunny for my sweet daughter, the first one was my son's flying saucer. For this cake I used a rectangular puff cake (like those used for the cream slice), vanilla cream, and some food coloring (the eyes, ears, and mouth). I just cut out the head and painted a cartoon bunny face. His ears are folded to save space on a cake base :) The whiskers are made using licorice laces, the nose — out of a fruity toffee candy.
In the past week we celebrated the twins' forth birthday. They couldn't agree on what cake they want, so eventually everybody has had their own special cake. I'll start with the boy's one. It's a flying saucer, or UFO. I like making cakes and am good at it, but with kids cakes I usually prefer to put my energy into decorating rather than baking, especially when I have to prepare not just one, but two cakes. This really makes you think twice and save your energy :)
About two years ago I had to make a cake for a kindergarten graduation party of my twins — the boy and the girl. I didn't have much time for something exceptional, but still wanted a special and unforgettable cake. Also, I wanted that each of my younger children can feel very special and unique. We had a few ideas, but eventually had chosen this one — a cake that symbolizes the Day and Night, Water and Earth (like Yin and yang for kids :). So, everybody got their own special half, although both make the whole cake :) All in all, the twins liked it, and that's what really matters. I used a sponge cake and some colored cream for decorating.
This cake is very easy to make, but kids will enjoy it no less than any other kids cake. You will need a square or rectangular cake, vanilla cream, cocoa powder, blue and green food coloring and an image of a map. Divide the cream into few cups and mix it with food colorings and cocoa, use the colors to draw the map. As you've probably guessed, we made a map of Neverland, the isle of Peter Pan. You can see Indian Camp, Mermaid Lagoon with a swimming mermaid, and the Captain Hook's ship. You can make your own map, or another "famous" one, like the map of Treasure Island. The idea of a map cake is from Quick & Easy Party Cakes for Kids: Over 130 Delicious Recipes.
This is another cake from my archive. I found the idea for this cake in Quick & Easy Party Cakes for Kids: Over 130 Delicious Recipes, although my way of making it is different.
Another idea for decorating a birthday cake. Unfortunately, the only photo I have is old and bad. I tried to fix it in Photoshop and this is what I could achieve given my Photoshop skills.
The bottom part is a big square with a smaller square on top of it. There is a big tower on top of that. All these parts are cut out of sponge cakes. Stack round cookies sandwiched with vanilla cream for the four towers at the corners. Ice-cream cones make perfect roofs. Decorate the cake with pieces of white chocolate and cookies. The castle cake is very high, so make sure you have enough space in the fridge :)
More on cakes, focusing on cake decoration. I made this one for my 5 year old daughter's last birthday. I must say it looked great and was pretty easy to make.
I cut two triangles from two sponge cakes, put them together to form a rhombus. Used the leftovers to built a hut on the deck. Coated it with chocolate cream. Made the roof, board and ladder from waffles. The animals and Noah's figure are "Little People" toys, they're not edible :)
