Simple framed quilling with daisies and a bumblebee

Quilling picture: Daisies and a bumblebee

I made this quick and simple quilling picture with daisies and fluffy orange flowers for a gift. The innovation here is that the bumblebee is fluffy, too, unlike all my other quilled bumblebees. I made it using the fringed flowers technique of black, white, and yellow paper strips 1/4 inches wide (~7 mm) and 6 inches long (~15 cm) each. This lengths corresponds to half the length of a 12"-long quilling strip or an A4 paper sheet.

If you want to make a bumblebee like this, glue together three paper strips so that the end of one is attached to the of another: a black strip, a yellow strip and then a black one again. Cut the fringe and create a tight roll, glue down the end. Then push the center out a little bit to make a cup (a hemisphere-like shape), coat the inner side with glue and let it dry. Fluff up the fringe. This would be the bumblebee's head. To create the body glue one-by-one a white paper strip, half of a black strip, then a yellow strip and half of a black one once again. Cut the fringe and roll a tight coil starting from the white end, glue down the other end and push the center. Coat the inner side with glue and let dry. Then fluff up the fringe. If you had a chance to take a look at my 3D quilled lion tutorial, then you should make the bumblebee like the lion's mane. When both parts are ready, glue them together, attach the wings and antennae. The wings can be made of "teardrop" shapes using 1/16"-wide strips (1.5 mm).

Size of the finished work is 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (14 x 14 cm), it's framed in a deep white IKEA shadowbox.
